The early morning weather seemed to suggest that there might be some more rain on the way and certainly it looked a possibility on the drive up.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/movens74\/27395427749\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"2017-12-20 08.45.13-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4594\/27395427749_26656dfe21_o.jpg\" width=\"5568\" height=\"3712\" alt=\"2017-12-20 08.45.13-1.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As always, the possibility of inclement weather is of course no deterrent to us visiting any of the zoos. Arriving shortly after the gates opened, first stop was the Koalas who were enjoying a little early morning sleep-in.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/movens74\/39172319191\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"2017-12-20 09.31.06-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4587\/39172319191_b424357a2d_o.jpg\" width=\"5568\" height=\"3712\" alt=\"2017-12-20 09.31.06-1.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" along a branch:<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/movens74\/24311954787\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"2017-12-20 09.40.48-2.jpg\"><img gave an opportunity to take a closer look at the right &#8220;hand&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/movens74\/39145564282\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"2017-12-20 09.41.16-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4733\/39145564282_97e84e883b_o.jpg\" width=\"5568\" height=\"3712\" alt=\"2017-12-20 09.41.16-2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another gave a look that suggested they really were up late partying the previous night:<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/movens74\/25307598268\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"2017-12-20 09.42.29-1.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kangaroo Country was due to open around midday with a media event at 10am, but thanks to a long lens, it was possible to get a little sneak peak of what was in store.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/movens74\/38465282614\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"2017-12-20 09.48.00-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" big male also seemed keen to see what was on the inside:<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/movens74\/38296322575\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" alt=\"2017-12-20 09.54.06-2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With a few hours available before the official opening, there was time to visit a few of the other animals, passing by the Brolgas first:<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/movens74\/38465292844\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"2017-12-20 10.03.36-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4589\/38465292844_4bdd4275eb_o.jpg\" width=\"5568\" height=\"3712\" alt=\"2017-12-20 10.03.36-4.jpg\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Next was the Tasmanian Devils:<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/movens74\/24311990757\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"2017-12-20 10.11.19-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" chirruped for some attention:<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/movens74\/39172361931\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"2017-12-20 10.30.21-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4596\/39172361931_0b0c46949c_o.jpg\" width=\"5568\" height=\"3712\" alt=\"2017-12-20 10.30.21-5.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/movens74\/27395496219\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"2017-12-20 10.30.36-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4638\/27395496219_88b61c6aef_o.jpg\" width=\"5568\" height=\"3712\" alt=\"2017-12-20 10.30.36-2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This beautiful bird looks very similar to the Helmeted Honeyeater, but is much larger and actually a darker yellow in colour.<\/p>\n<p>While leaving the aviary, the Helmeted Honeyeater flew up to the wire and sat so close that a macro lens would have been needed. This magical close encounter was eventually cut short by other visitors approaching, which then resulted in the bird&#8217;s retreat back into the trees and enabled a few shots without a lens change.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/movens74\/27395499599\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"2017-12-20 10.38.23-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4686\/27395499599_8cf54134f3_o.jpg\" width=\"5568\" height=\"3712\" alt=\"2017-12-20 10.38.23-3.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Helmeted Honeyeater is not only Victoria&#8217;s state bird, but is also critically endangered. Zoos Victoria is working hard to prevent the species from going extinct and recently announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoo.org.au\/news\/helmeted-honeyeaters-released-to-the-wild\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">release of four birds<\/a> from the captive breeding program.<\/p>\n<p>Next stop was the reptile house:<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/movens74\/39145630912\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"2017-12-20 10.44.52-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4642\/39145630912_8d79494eae_o.jpg\" width=\"5568\" height=\"3712\" alt=\"2017-12-20 10.44.52-1.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/movens74\/39172384851\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"2017-12-20 10.46.29-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4638\/39172384851_7ff5c70ace_o.jpg\" width=\"5568\" height=\"3712\" alt=\"2017-12-20 10.46.29-1.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/movens74\/39172392541\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"2017-12-20 10.48.20-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4692\/39172392541_e26f01342b_o.jpg\" width=\"5568\" height=\"3712\" alt=\"2017-12-20 10.48.20-1.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And then the Lyrebird enclosure. As unlikely as it seems, this species of kangaroo actively climbs trees and Zoos Victoria have provided them with a tree house perched high in the branches.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/movens74\/38465355924\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"2017-12-20 11.45.56-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4633\/38465355924_014295b249_o.jpg\" width=\"5568\" height=\"3712\" alt=\"2017-12-20 11.45.56-4.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/movens74\/24312050887\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"2017-12-20 11.46.01-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" prevent Mani and Bagum from exploring the surrounding branches and showing their natural agility.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/movens74\/25307687138\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" title=\"2017-12-20 11.46.09-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" comfortable lodgings, Zoos Victoria is working hard to fight the potential extinction of the Goodfellows Tree Kangaroo, including through the cultivation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoo.org.au\/fighting-extinction\/international-programs-and-grants\/tree-kangaroo-conservation-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coffee plantations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After spending a fair amount of time watching Mani and Bagum, it was time to head home and, on the way, stop by the Zoo Shop to pick up some fresh coffee beans and help out
